House 378
Project – House 378
Location – Winchester
Scope of Works – Renovation + Extension
This quirky split level property is set within a steeply sloping site, with the primary living spaces located at first floor. Whilst this affords the best views across the valley below, the previous layout meant that connectivity with the garden was poor, and the rooms felt cramped and dark.
Through the addition of a striking timber-clad extension we have created a more open plan feeling at first floor, with large expanses of glazing, roof lights and vaulted ceilings ensuring that these spaces feel bright and airy. The addition of a new external staircase allows the garden to become more accessible, leading down to a newly landscaped patio.
This distinctive extension with its up-and-over timber-clad roof creates framed views of the garden below and, whilst bold in its form, creates a continuity between front and rear that helps to ground the property within the landscape. The cedar cladding will silver over time, softening these sharp edges whilst still retaining its playful character.
House 378 was shortlisted for the RICS awards 2017.
